Sawmill

This sawmill has cut a lot of timber from trees in the Flagstaff area. That right! Don would drive “The Other Woman” , a 1947 International KB 12 with a log hauling flatbed up to Flagstaff in the summer. Just the sound and look of that beautiful old semi-truck driven by an old trucker was a delight! Don would drive the harvested logs back to the Gold King Mine to begin slicing the planks of rough -cut timber. The photo at the right is the new rails for the saw after installation. The hit and miss motor that powers that huge flywheel in the background is a wonder as it chugs through the day. It’s right out our back door as you exit the Gift Shop.

Big Bertha!

Big Bertha is like no other! This noisy back-firing behemoth was one of Don’s favorite things to fire up when a tourist would ask him. Yes, it usually cost a small donation to the fuel and fun fund, but that was nothing for the explosive retorts from Big Bertha when she gets fired up! An old tractor being started is the first step in the multi-step process of bringing Bertha to life! We can call that the “starter” for Big Bertha and it’s all uphill from there!
